What is a Sherpa Team?
CFOs and Area Presidents work closely with one another, as a ‘Sherpa Team’, guiding clients on the path to success. Area Presidents work as business development leaders, with a passion for networking and building community. They also serve as strategic relationship managers who match the right CFO with each client. CFOs are the primary service delivery and relationship professional, ‘on-the-ground’ with clients each week, embedded into their leadership teams, guiding them on the climb to value.

Fractional CFOs

Consider a role as a fractional CFO with FocusCFO. We offer seasoned financial executives the opportunity to guide owners of small & mid-sized businesses on their climb to success - on your own time.
CFOs at FocusCFO are locally based, part of a regional team that is led by a full time entrepreneurial business development person (Area President). We have a strong client acquisition process and do not send you out to find clients on your own.
CFOs tend to work on a long-term, recurring basis with a set of small and medium-sized enterprises. You have the flexibility to set your own schedule and the resultant number of clients you work with: most client work is local and onsite, though a growing percentage have a remote component. Overnight travel is not required. Short-term project or interim work is not what we seek.
This is not a traditional W2 opportunity. If you are at the right place in your career, it is exactly what you are looking for.
Successful CFO candidates tend to fit the following profile:
- Passion to work alongside entrepreneurs and their teams. To make a real difference by rolling up your sleeves, sharing experience and expertise.
- 20+ years of financial and operational experience, with a significant amount at the CFO level.
- Strong business acumen with extensive experience in strategic planning and operations.
- Track record of excellence, achievement and entrepreneurial drive.
- Relish the role of a Sherpa. Not only guiding, but climbing alongside clients as they reach for their goals, as an embedded (fractional) member of their leadership team.
- Are willing to invest in their own self-improvement, learn new skills and be coached.
- Are a team player willing to follow the FocusCFO® process.
- Are exceptional listeners and communicators, able to develop long-term relationships as a trusted advisor.
- Want the ability to manage their own schedule, balancing personal and family responsibilities.
- Desire to be part of a 100% collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Desire to work for at least another 5-7 years.
- Have a degree of financial security providing the flexibility appropriate for this nontraditional role.
How we operate:
- These are not W-2 positions, CFOs are paid based on actual services provided to clients.
- We operate using a License Agreement, where an upfront investment is required to join the FocusCFO team. This helps evidence your commitment to the FocusCFO culture/operating model, and provides you access to our best-in-class training, resource center, ongoing best practices sessions, and companywide resources.
Note: FocusCFO® complies with all Federal and state regulations and, as such, utilizes the proper disclosures to fully outline the arrangement. There are no informal handshake agreements with us.
Successful candidates must have financial stability and the ability to support themselves during a ramp-up period, which can range from six to 12 months.
Area Presidents
Running a business is hard. You know because you've been there. You've experienced the highs and the lows, and now you're ready to help others who are charting a similar path.
This role is right for you if you have an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for building a network of collaborative relationships with local service providers and community leaders. Area Presidents work with a local team of CFOs to support a client base of small and medium-sized businesses in their geographic area. You have experience as a business owner, successfully managing and exiting your business, or as a C-Level professional whose career shows a dedication to supporting entrepreneurial business owners throughout their career.
Area Presidents are naturally entrepreneurial and are connected to a strong network of local referral partners including bankers, business coaches, wealth and estate planners, insurance advisors, accountants and bookkeepers, and other fractional executives.
Those who are a good fit will recognize it immediately. This is not a traditional W2 opportunity, so those with a W2 mentality or a lack of entrepreneurial drive and spirit should not inquire.
Successful Area President candidates tend to fit the following profile:
- A strong entrepreneurial drive to build a meaningful book of business.
- Respect and empathy for entrepreneurs, with a passion to help them succeed
- 20+ years of business experience. A successful entrepreneur who has managed and exited their business or a successful professional who has supported entrepreneurial business owners throughout their career.
- A starting base of local advisor relationships. Wired to grow and deepen a referral network.
- The skills and emotional intelligence for both consultative business development and ongoing relationship
management with both entrepreneurs and a local team of CFOs. - Are willing to invest in the skills and activities needed to build a book of business.
- Are a team player willing to follow the FocusCFO® process.
- Are a great listener who seeks first to understand and asks great questions.
- Have a strong understanding of how a CFO works with business owners and how an entrepreneurial business really works.
- Have a degree of financial security providing them the flexibility appropriate for this nontraditional role and the runway needed as they build a book of business.
- Desire to be part of a 100% collaborative, team-oriented environment.
How we operate:
- Area Presidents are compensated based on CFO services provided to clients and have the opportunity to build a recurring book of business with transferable value.
- We operate using a franchise model, where you sign a Franchise Agreement and pay a reasonable franchise fee to join the FocusCFO team. This helps evidence your commitment to the FocusCFO culture/operating model, and provides you access to our training, resource center, ongoing best practices sessions, and companywide resources.
